It's get giddy time! The Hyperdub 5 year comp has finally landed, and as everyone already knew, it's a truly heavyweight package. This is the only place you're going to find AN exclusive Burial track, unreleased killers from Kode 9, The Bug and Zomby next to freeze-dried freshness from Cooly G, Joker, Martyn, Flying Lotus, Samiyam, Ikonika, Mala, LD and Darkstar. A cast of unique producers split over two discs, one holding a hand to it's brow and gazing into the future, while a second allows time for the indulgence of nostalgia. The Hyperdub imprint has basically become the go-to point for the finest UK (and now worldwide) Bass music of the last 5 years, skillfully and philosophically managed under the A&R of Kode 9, cherry-picking the most crucial records and artists from a wide range of tempos and styles and placing them under a banner that's earned the trust of connoisseurs everywhere. Everyone knows that the label is sitting on a treasure trove of Burial material, but it's a credit to Steve Goodman's (aka Kode 9) management that it hasn't been splurged into the market, making the two tracks here even more precious. Hearing Burial's 'Fostercare' for the first time is an exquisite delight. There's no excessive advancements, but more a reinforcement of his style, witnessing him shape the bass swing to ever more exacting requirements and brushing his rhythms with a cool sleight of hand that's still utterly breathtaking. We can't heap enough praise on Cooly G's 'Weekend Fly' either. Since hearing it tucked away on mixes over the last 9 months we've been addicted to it's fleeting rhythms and martial swing, waiting for the seductive vocals and craning our ears to catch those silvery notes hidden deep within. Kode's tracks are healthily represented too, from the shocking 'Fukkaz' finally seeing the light of day, or even more so the exclusive 'Ghost Town', quite possibly one of his and Spaceape's finest moments to date. The shiny new skool of 8-Bit 'n Bass practitioners are duly given their time with Ikonika's robustly exotic 'Sahara Michael' and Quarta 330's 'Bleeps From Outer Space' next to the established anthem 'Aidys Girl's A Computer' from Darkstar, while rootical futurism is represented with Kevin Martin's King Midas Touch wickedness on 'Meltdown' and Mala's 'Level Nine'. We've probably exhausted your attention span already so we won't go through the whole 32 tracks on offer, but it's glaringly obvious that this is one of the most vital compilations of any kind to be released this year and simply requires a spot in your respective record collections. Essential purchase!

October 2009 heralds the release of ‘5’, a 32 track double CD marking Hyperdub’s five years of life as a record label. Honouring past, present and future in equal measure, ‘5’ is comprised of one disc of prior highlights, and one of freshly-composed material contributed by Hyperdub artists and close friends.
The first disc contains 16 brand new compositions from a heavyweight line-up which includes Burial, Cooly G, Darkstar, Flying Lotus, Ikonika, Joker & Ginz, King Midas Sound, Kode9 & The Spaceape, Mala, Martyn, and Zomby. The second disc features 16 key tunes from the Hyperdub back catalogue, many making their first ever appearance on CD and long since sold out of their original 12” vinyl versions. Also included is Kode9 & The Spaceape’s previously-download-only ‘Fukkaz’, and their semi-legendary unreleased reading of ‘Ghost Town’, in which The Specials’ anthemic lament is given a similar deconstructed bass treatment as that inflicted upon Prince’s ‘Sign O’ The Times’ to such dramatic and remarkable effect on the label’s debut release in 2004.
After half a decade of consistent artistic and commercial success for all Hyperdub’s releases, there is little need in these pages to talk up the import of their influence upon the current electronic music landscape - we can leave that in the hands of the denizens of the international print & web press, who have been fulsome indeed in their aniticpation of ‘5’ right from the moment the project was first announced.
